CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik has left Samsung just two years after the South Korean electronics giant hired him to work on the company’s Android phones. CyanogenMod is an aftermarket firmware for a number of devices based on Android that offers features not found in the official Android based firmware of vendors of these devices.

Kondik made the announcement on a Google+ post and stated that his departure from Samsung had nothing to do with anything in particular and that he just decided to do something new. He also declined to give any statements or interviews about his stay with Samsung though he did mention a few things about the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the company’s Touchwiz UI.

For starters, Kondik praised the Galaxy S4 saying that it blows the competition out of the water and even citing a few benchmark scores to compare the device with its competition. Unfortunately had less kind words for Samsung’s Touchwiz UI, saying that it has been sent a few years back in time to the Froyo days, although he did add later in his statement that Touchwiz UI is a matter of consumer preference.

By the looks of it, Kondik’s positive thoughts on the Galaxy S4 might be a strong indicative of CyanogenMod providing support for the handset in the near future. However, it’s good to note that he did mention that he wanted to do something new so it’ll be very interesting what kind of project he’ll be doing after his departure from Samsung.
