The upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update is set to bring a number of new updates to Microsoft’s mobile operating system. One particular new feature that a lot of people find interesting is news about Cortana – a Siri-like feature that allows users to interact with the handset using voice commands.

The name Cortana first appeared in an alleged screenshot from an early update build and is taken after the AI character in the popular game series Halo.

According to rumours, Cortana will be able to learn and adapt to a user and will rely on Microsoft’s Satori knowledge repository, which the company also utilises for Bing.

Moreover, The Verge has also published screenshots of what it claims to be an early test version of Windows Phone Cortana personal assistant where it shows how the virtual assistant is able to pull weather, calendar events, notifications, location information and controls for Bluetooth devices to name a few. The images also show some of the settings and customisations used in Cortana.

The Windows Phone update is schedule to arrive before the end of the year so we’ll just have to wait and see if Cortana will come with the update and if so, how will it work.
