Following consumers trial in 2013, Coles announced the launch of its Mobile Wallet, a contactless payment system combining a smartphone app and near field communication (NFC) Pay Tags.

These tags are stuck to the back of the user's phone, and can be used at terminals that accept PayPass payments. In addition, they feature a barcode that can be scanned to collect to Flybuys points from purchases. Using the newly released Coles Credit Card app, users can enable or disable the tag for extra security. The app also displays account balances, available credit, transaction history and Flybuys point balances.

Mobile Wallet is currently compatible with the Coles Rewards MasterCard and Coles No Annual Fee MasterCard. Consumers are not required to pay any additional fees to enable contactless payments.

The Coles Mobile Wallet system currently requires proprietary Pay Tags, and is not able to make use of NFC technology already featured in smartphones.
