BlackBerry Z10 owners in Australia now have a new reason to celebrate as the new BlackBerry 10.1 operating system is now available for download to customers in Australia.

Z10 users will be able to update their handsets by simply looking for the alert in the notifications section of the BlackBerry Hub. They can also check for software updates through the settings menu by visiting the software updates section.

The update will be downloaded in the background so information stored in the device will be safe. Although BlackBerry recommends that users perform a backup of their handsets before updating.

The new BlackBerry 10.1 OS features include an update to the BlackBerry Hub, notifications, cursor control and camera. Details of these updates are summarized below.

BLACKBERRY HUB – BB Hub lets users access messages and notifications in one place. The BlackBerry Hub supports PIN to PIN messages for direct communication between BlackBerry Smartphones. Plus, improved attachment support in the new Hub makes it easier to view emails which have been sent as attachments to other messages.

NOTIFICATIONS – The new OS will allow users to personalise the notifications for their accounts and contacts. Users can customise ringtones, vibration and the LED light by contact or by the account for a more personalised notification.

FINE CURSOR CONTROL – Improvements on the cursor control on the other hand is aimed to provide BB 10.1 users with a pleasant typing experience. A single tap on the screen will bring up a blue circle which you can drag and move quickly and precisely to help users make corrections more conveniently.

CAMERA – BlackBerry 10.1 OS adds in support for HDR shooting mode for beautiful images in tricky lighting conditions. HDR or High Dynamic Range mode takes multiple pictures at different exposure levels and layers them automatically to produce a single photo that combines the best of the dark and light areas.
