BlackBerry today announced the international availability of its highly anticipated instant messaging app – BBM.

According to a blog post on BlackBerry’s Blog, the company will be launching BBM for Android and iOS over the weekend, with the Android version getting a September 21 debut while the iOS version to follow the following day.

The app will have the following features:

  • BBM Chat – The app will allow users to chat with their family and friends on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones as well as share files on their phone such as photos and voice notes in an instant. BBM will also let users know that their message has been delivered and read and shows when friends are responding to a message.
  • Multi-person chat – BBM will allow uses to invite up to 30 friends to chat together. Moreover, users will still be able to share photos and schedule via a Broadcast Message feature.
  • Post status and PIN – the app also allow users to post a personal message, profile picture and current status. And as on the BlackBerry version, BBM for Android and iOS sports a unique PIN for every user in order to maintain privacy.

At present, BBM has over 60 million users worldwide, majority of which use the app at an average of 90 minutes per day and collectively send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day. With its expansion to Android and iOS, these numbers are expected to increase. However, it faces tough competition from a number of other instant messaging apps; so only time will tell if BBM will be successful outside BB OS. What do you think?
