According to reports by AFP, audiences have flocked to the US cinemas this weekend with Batman raking in more than 155.3 million dollars in ticket sales – topping the 151.1 million previously set by Spiderman 3 in May 2007.

Screenings for the film over the weekend were sold out well in advance, with queues of fans lining up for tickets.

Exhibitors have been surprised by the overwhelming response to the film – with many citing interest in Heath Ledger’s performance as a driver for the film’s huge attendence.

The film has already made back its production costs ($180 mil) and reviewers are tipping Ledger for a posthumous Oscar nomination. The film also stars, Christian Bale as Batman and the all star cast includes Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart.
