Google is getting in on the Android tablet popularity by selling magazines through the Play Store in Australia.

The new feature is set to compete with Apple’s Newstand, with major publishers, including ACP, Pacific Magazines and NewsLifeMedia, hopping on board.

To give users a taste, publishers are offering the first issue free to subscribers and some magazines will also launch with back issues available to purchase.

One feature the Android service has that Apple doesn’t is the ability to view titles in a text only version, no images and ads for an easy reading experience. Text size is adjustable, making long form articles much clearer to read.

On the other side, Google also offers interactivity in their digital magazines. These interactive magazines are marked with a special badge in the Play Store under the magazine's cover. Although you would need a 7-inch or 10-inch tablet to use it, ruling out the ability to enjoy them on devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, or the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab.
