Asus has gone back to the drawing board with its Padfone sinker and has come out with the renewed Padfone 2.

The company has unveiled the new gadget in Taipei. The Padfone 2 now has a huge 4.7-inch 720p HD screen and is loaded with top shelf components, from the quad-core Qualcomm processor, to the 2GB of RAM on board, to the 13MP camera.

It now has a completely different design from its predecessor. There is no docking bay cover now, replaced by a slide-in slot for the phone.

The tablet still has the same 10.1-inch screen, but with a slightly smaller battery than its predecessor- 649grams from 854 grams.

The camera itself is capable of shooting 30fps 1080p video, 60fps 720p video or up to 100 continuous still shots at full resolution. In the front is a 1.2MP camera.

The tablet has LTE support and NFC functionality with a 2,140mAh fixed battery.

The phone-tablet combo will come with Ice Cream Sandwich and can be upgraded soon to Jelly Bean.

The phablet will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and can be bought with or without the tablet station. First stop for release is Taiwan.

Pricing starts at AUD$599 for the 16GB phone only, and ranges up to AUD$729 for the 64GB version. The tablet dock, when purchased by itself, costs AUD$299, but can also be bundled with the phone for AUD$199.
