Apple Scam Targets Aussies

A new Apple scam is targeting Australians whereby they try and get people to buy Apple Discount Cards. When you click on the link and buy the card, the money goes straight into the scammers coffers.

Dear Apple Customer,

Apple is rewarding its long-term customers. Your loyalty for our products made you eligible for buying an Apple Discount Card. With this only 9 AU$ Discount Card you will have 100 AU$ credit at any Australian Apple Store or on http://www.apple.com/au/

The Apple store URL is correct, but the when you click the ‘here’ button it takes you to a phishing site designed to get your personal details as well as debit your credit card account.

CyberShack enlisted the help of security software specialist Trend Micro to diagnose the scam and who it has targeted.

They found two versions:

  • Version 1  lasted from 3rd April -7am 4th April
  • Version 2 started at  7am 4th April and was still going at the time of analysis.

They saw 3.4 % of people trying to click on this scam.It was well targeted at Australians as just under 93 percent of recipients were from Australia. Other countries where it was found included New Zealand, Denmark, the United States Of America, Italy, Britain and France.
