Another 550,000 premises added to National Broadband Network rollout
NBN Co yesterday announced that an additional 550,000 homes and businesses across Australia have been added to the National Broadband Network (NBN) roadmap. Work on connecting these premises will commence by September next year.
"The addition of 550,000 homes and businesses to the construction schedule demonstrates the continuing momentum of the nationwide delivery of fast broadband," said NBN CEO Bill Morrow. "Our job is to ensure that all Australians can have access to fast broadband as soon and as efficiently as possible. Homes and businesses across Australia will benefit from the nationwide upgrade to Australia’s broadband infrastructure."
The new premises will be connected using NBN Co's "multi-technology-mix", including fibre-to-the-node and fixed-wireless. The rollout schedule does not currently account for cable or satellite connections. NBN director Simon Hackett recently criticised the government's use of fibre-to-the-node technology while speaking at Rewind/Fast Forward, a forum discussing the impact of internet on businesses and communities.
"Fibre to the node is the least-exciting part of the current policy," said Hackett. "If I could wave a wand, it's the bit I'd be erasing."
Hackett is a strong supporter of the fibre-to-the-premise model, where high speed fibre is connected directly to a customer's home or office.
