ACCC launches iPhone App For Recalls

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today launched its Recalls Australia iPhone app to provide information on recalled consumer goods.

It is aimed at consumers and based on information from the Recalls Australia website, the app was launched on YouTube by ACCC deputy chairman Peter Kell.

“The app provides Australian consumers with easily searchable information on Australian consumer good recalls,” Kell said. “For consumers, this means that when you’re out and about doing your shopping, you can quickly and easily check for recalled products on your phone. For example, you could be at a garage sale, where a recalled product might have unwittingly been made available for purchase.”

The app lists information for each recall, allowing consumers to identify the recalled product, where it was sold, and – importantly – what to do if you have one of the products.

“Additionally, the app allows you to report products you think are unsafe directly to the ACCC. You can even attach a photo you’ve taken from your phone of the product,” Kell said. “The recalls app is just one of the latest ways the ACCC is communicating product safety information to consumers and businesses.”

The launch of this app follows the 2010 launch of the Product Safety Australia website, the ACCC’s Product Safety Twitter profile @ProductSafetyAU and its YouTube Channel.

The Recalls Australia app is available via the iTunes Apple Store at no cost.
