Ears on with Samsung’s Dolby Atmos sound bar
Samsung’s Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar – the HW-K950 – will be showing up in Australian stores shortly, and I recently had a chance to go hands – well, ears – on with the system ahead of its local launch.
Dolby Atmos is a relatively new surround sound technology that incorporates overhead speakers for a fuller sound. In a cinema, these can be mounted on the roof, but this isn’t always possible in a home. Samsung’s K950 sound bar gets around this by incorporating up-firing speakers that then bounce off the ceiling. In the case of the K950, this results in what Dolby refers to a 5.1.4 speaker configuration. There’s a sound bar with three front-firing speakers and two up-firing speakers, a wireless subwoofer, and two dedicated rear-facing wireless units that both also feature up-firing speakers (pictured below).
