In a move that will impact YouTube viewers and members of the Music industry, You Tube has announced it will now block the viewing of music videos by UK users.

The move comes after the UK PRS (Performance Rights Society) requested new terms for the royalties currently paid by YouTiube to the PRS on behalf of its 50,000 strong membrship.

According to YouTube the new arrangement was asking it to pay “many, many times” more than the previous licensing agreement that had recently expired.

YouTube revealed that the new cost system was too expensive to continue providing users with the service:

“The costs are simply prohibitive for us – under PRS’s proposed terms, we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback,” .

Meanwhile PRS faigned shock at the announcement – claiming they were still in negotitaions wth YouTube.

“We were shocked and disappointed to receive a call late this afternoon informing us of Google’s drastic action,” said PRS for Music chief executive Steve Porter.
