According to reports in today’s SMH, the number of creatures in the Spore creature creator database now outnumber the known species on Earth.
Created by renowned game developer, Will Wright (Sims) for the EA owned Maxis Studios, Spore will have millions of lifeforms available in the online database before the game launches this September.
Even Wright has been surprised by the response to the game’s Creature Creator software – which was released as a free download scant weeks ago.
“I was really hoping we’d get 100,000 creatures by September and a million by the end of the year,” Wright said. “We hit 100K in 22 hours and a million by the end of the first week. The numbers are just blowing us away.”
Spore allows players to build an entire universe, with characters starting out as microscopic lifeforms and gradually evolving into creatures that can build sophisticated civilisations, with cities, governments and trade.
The game will be a computer gaming first – in that the game worlds will be inhabited by creatures that have been created by players at home rather than programmers.
