Sony announced today updates for its line of Xperia smartphones as well as for its A7 and A7R full frame interchangeable lens cameras.

For its smartphones, the Japanese company will update the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z1 Compact with Android 4.4 KitKat. The firmware upgrade will bring about improvements not only to the overall performance of the phones but also cosmetic changes that should help improve user interface.

The update should bring a new user interface that is consistent with what Sony has put in place on the PlayStation 4. The company’s native apps (such as its Messaging, Smart Connect, Smart Apps, Track ID, Sony Select and Smart Social camera) and its multimedia apps (Walkman, Album, and Movies) will also be improved.

Moreover, Sony has indicated that the Android 4.4 update for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z is already in development and should roll out in May or June.

Owners of the company’s A7 and A7R full-frame ILCs will also be delighted to know that Sony is rolling out a firmware update starting today.

With firmware version 1.2, both cameras will benefit from boosted image quality, new applications, faster startup times, reduced color noise in speed priority continuous mode, reduced color artifacts in bright scenes and new live-view grading and smooth reflection tools.

The update will also enable better AE tracking in the Timelapse app and brings in compatibility with the new 70-200mm full-frame lens.
