There has always been a huge rivalry between Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona, and while Barcelona can claim bragging rights with the La Liga title this year, Madrid’s marquee player Cristiano Ronaldo outperforms Barca’s Lionel Messi in the minds of Aussie fans. In fact the FIFA World Footballer of the Year doesn’t even get in the top 10 with Aussie’s Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell being at numbers two and three respectively.

While Ronaldo is more popular, Messi’s Argentina are looking the more likely team to lift the cup near the business end of the tournament with Portugal and Manchester United key player Nani just being ruled out injured.

The top 10 internet football player searches in Australia for the World Cup are:

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) 8.01%
2. Tim Cahill (Australia) 4.60%
3. Harry Kewell (Australia) 4.52%
4. Fernando Torres (Spain) 4.30%
5. Ronaldino (Brazil) 3.01%
6. Joe Cole (England) 2.12%
7. Cesc Fabregas (Spain) 1.89%
8. Mark Schwarzer (Australia) 1.77%
