As anti-virus brands go, Trend Micro has been around for a while- meaning it’s a company with a fair bit of pedigree behind it when it comes to fighting the good online fight.

And with this latest release, the 2012 version of Titanium Maximum Security, Trend Micro has once again delivered a product that is both easy to understand (i.e. use) and easy to install.

There are virtually no silly pop-ups for example, the programs does a very fast check of your system to enable it to see whether you have the right configurations and performs its background scan with the minimum of fuss.

With its access to the in-built cloud service called Safe Sync providing 25 GB worth of your cleaned files accessible from anywhere on the planet and category-driven parental controls, quarantine vault, malware, virus, Trojan and other nasties protection, this version seems like a very solid offering.

Coming in a 12 ($149) or 24 ($199) month subscription version which is valid for 5 PCs means your anti-virus protection will be taken care of and of course, with its constant threat definition updates, the need for you to actually understand what is nasty and what is not is also taken care of for you.

When you do find something nasty, you can wipe it from the face of cyberspace with the handy eraser function and overall, the scanning of my system took only about 15 minutes, which I thought was fairly reasonable for a data volume the size of mine.

Another interesting little feature is the fact that once installed, this anti-virus suite will give you the option to protect your mobile (Android / Windows) devices as well- a nice move as these days with constant sharing and swapping of data across numerous platforms, it is a great idea to keep all your devices clean and not just the one you consider as your main workstation.

Best of all, there is also a Mac version.

Any annoying bits? The biggest pain I had with this anti-virus suite was its near-pathological need to have all your browsers up to date before you install it. And if you are running Windows XP, well then, you can forget this anti-virus suite- it’s just won’t work.

I tried and tried and had to then borrow my wife's laptop to be able to do this review.

Overall, Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security suite is a good, solid piece of software that is perfect for the home or perhaps even the SOHO user.

Two things I would remember to do- uninstall any other anti-virus program you may be using first as a precaution and also ensure all your browser-ware is up to scratch and that you are running at least Windows 7- otherwise, you'll end up spending an hour of your Saturday afternoon swearing at your screen just like I did.

Pros: Easy to use, solid protection, Mac version available
Cons: Won't work with older OS & Browsers,
