Police in New Zealand have managed to track down a young safe cracking thief after publishing his picture on Facebook.

The Queenstown police posted security-camera footage and pictures showing the man’s face as he tried to break into the safe of a local bar… The thief had donned a balaclava to conceal his identity but had become too hot and removed it during the break in – not realising that his every move was being captured on camera.

Bar staff did not recognise the man, but Bar Manager Mel Kelly suspected he was a former employer because of his knowledge of the property.

At this point police stepped in – using the vision from the security camera, they posted clips and images to their Facebook site urging members of the public to come forward if they recognised the man.

An arrest ensued; with Queenston Police labelling it their first “facebook arrest”. The man ( 21 year old apprentcie) is due to appear in local court to face charges.
