This week on Mobile Mondays we’ll be talking about two new handsets that made an appearance a few days ago – the Huawei Ascend W2 and the Motorola Moto G.
The Huawei Ascend W2 has long been in rumour land even just a few months after the Ascend W1 was announced. This week, the Chinese manufacturer has finally made the handset official. And just like its predecessor, the Ascend W2 will still go after the budget-conscious consumers who want Windows Phone.
This puts the Ascend W2 in direct competition with the Nokia Lumia 520 and as such sports similar specs. These include a 4.3-inch IPS LCD screen with 480 x 800 pixel screen resolution and pixel density of 217 pixels per inch. It also packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8230 chipset with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, Adreno 305 GPU, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of non-expandable storage.
There’s also a 5MP snapper at the back that is capable of capturing 720p videos, 1.3MP camera at the front and a 1700mAh battery. In terms of connectivity, the handset will pack 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0 and micro-USB connectivity.
There’s no word yet on pricing but we should expect the Ascend W2 to be competitively priced just like the Nokia Lumia 520. The phone is expected to ship in Russia and the Netherlands within the month with other markets soon to follow.
Meanwhile, halfway across the globe, Motorola’s new mid-range handset – the Moto G had its specs and pricing confirmed through a promotional card that was leaked online a few days ago. According to the promo card, the handset will sport a 4.5-inch 720p edge-to-edge display with Gorilla Glass.
The phone will be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU and will have 8GB of storage, a 5MP camera at the back that is capable of 720p recording, a 1.3MP front-facing camera for video calls, Bluetooth v4.0, dual-SIM capabilities and interchangeable back plates.
The Moto G will run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and have a 1950mAh battery. The phone will be priced at around US$216 and should hit the stores just before the holidays.
