MacWorld: What Might Be
This week, the bigwigs at MacWorld (primarily THE bigwig – Steve Jobs) will be showcasing their big, new, and often aluminium-encased elements in design that leave a good lot of us salivating for more. On Tuesday in San Francisco and Wednesday morning in Australia, we’ll see Mr. Steve Jobs make the announcements that get all of us going.

Will it be a Tablet Mac? That’s sort of like a Tablet Pc except running Windows and probably slicked with that typical Mac style that all their products exude. There have been quite a few rumours of recent suggesting a move to a touchscreen Mac as well as some new jobs going at Apple in the field of touch engineering. Taking all of that into consideration, when you think about how much of a success the iPod Touch & iPhone have been, you start to realise they hey, maybe a touch-engineered Mac might just be what the doctor ordered.
Dr. Steve, that is.(No, he’s not a doctor. Quick someone give him an honorary doctorate so I can be seen as telling the truth and not just making a pointless sarcastic segue quip!) With all the fuss over the High-Definition format war, will the new Macs come with a new drive… like say a Blu-ray drive? The Mac Pro line-up recently got a quick upgrade in specs last week before MacWorld but this didn’t include a new optical drive. Will Blu-ray be one of Apple’s next big announcements? If you’re one of those people who want to buy a MacBook Pro but just don’t like the size, the rumour of a small MacBook Pro might be what you’ll dig. Predicted at half the thickness of the current Macbook Pro and with either a 12 or 13.3 inch screen, this would be one of the fastest ultra-portable laptops around the world.
The new laptops might even sport an interesting touch pad. Yes, even the touch pad is getting in the rumour trenches of late complete with this long touch pad idea put in as a patent.
If it really looks like that, it’ll certainly be interesting. I’m curious as to how it works. Toshiba had an interactive touchpad a few years ago actually, though it wasn’t colour and – seeing as it only appeared on one laptop – was probably ahead of its time. One new rumour has popped up and it’s beginning to spark some more talk about what it could be. The banners at MacWorld read as “2008. There’s something in the air.” What could it be? The talk right now is looking at wireless… well… everything. From possible wireless USB to WiMax all the way to Apple’s patent on induction charging, a technology that will do away with the need for a “port and plug” approach to keeping your laptop charged. The rumours are flying good and fast and no one knows which is right. Well, no one except for Steve and his team of engineers, designers, and people contractually obliged not to say anything lest they get hit with a lawsuit bigger than Australia. Wednesday morning at 4am if you’re awake… and later on that day when I’m awake, it’ll be here on Cyber Shack.
