In-car speed limit devices to inhibit hooning

One hundred cars in the Illawarra region (south of Sydney) will be fitted with an in-car speed limit device in an effort to curtail speeding drivers.

The satellite device alerts drivers of the speed limit of the road they are currently travelling on and can then decrease the fuel supply to engines (thus decreasing the speed) of the vehicle if it is travelling too fast.

Depending upon the success of the trial, the NSW Government will look at expanding the service to speed offending drivers throughout the state.

Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal says the devices could help cut the road toll.

“Any technology that slows drivers down and makes the roads safer is worth looking at… It may well have applications for recalcitrant speeders.”
