Microtransactions in terms of online games is a system that allows gamers to purchase items or other features within the game with the objective of either acquiring or achieving something to help a user improve their gameplay.

The system has been relatively frowned upon by a lot of gamers, dubbing it as a “pay-to-win” system. The microtransaction strategy first made news in the company’s third-person shooter game – Dead Space 3, where gamers can create a weapon by purchasing additional parts from an in-game store.

Gamers are also concerned that the overall cost of purchasing and playing a game would increase with the system, especially for expensive titles. On top of that, this “pay-to-win” system can affect how people play multiplayer sessions, since there will be an inherent inequality between users who can’t or doesn’t’ want to buy additional resources to win and those who do.

Nevertheless, according to EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen, consumers are enjoying and embracing microtransactions within games and the company is building this system into all of its future games.
