Britney Spears and Australia number one

What do Britney Spears and Australia have in common? They got searched for the most in 2008.

The top web searches in 2008 are out, and Britney Spears topped the list for the seventh time in a row.

Complied by Yahoo, their 2008 trends reveal that Britney managed to beat out WWE, Barack Obama, Miley Cyrus and Runescape for the honour. Jessica Alba came in 6th, while anime character Naruto, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie and American Idol rounded out the top 10.

Meanwhile, over at Google, Australians searched for Australia the most. Not the movie, but the country itself.

That was followed by games and people searching for song lyrics. Next up on the list were social websites Youtube.com and Facebook, with Myspace, Google itself, eBay, people entering in the word “My” commonly clicking on Myspace and free e-mail service Hotmail.

The stats are compiled through Google Insights, which also reveals that searches for The Olympics got the biggest spike, albeit over an unknown period.
