Beams Bring Sound Into Focus

  • Designed for small spaces
  • Slim profile
  • Sounds like multi-speaker system

Yamaha’s YSP-2200 digital sound projector is said to be suitable for listening environments with limited space or for those seeking an uncomplicated surround sound solution.

Comprising of a series of small speakers, each with their own independent built-in digital amplifier, the unit has technology that controls the orientation of the sound through focused ‘beams’. The centre channel sound is heard directly while audio from surrounding channels is heard after being reflected off walls. The resulting effect sounds like a multi-speaker system but without all the clutter associated with some surround speakers and cables.

Faced with the reality that many consumers are moving away from wall-mounted flat panel TVs, the unit is designed to sit neatly in front of a flat panel TV. At just under 8cm high, the low and slim profile of the sound bar does not obscure the screen. Furthermore, the height-adjustable feet let you achieve optimum positioning depending on the dimensions of your TV.

The subwoofer can also be conveniently placed vertically or horizontally depending on the available space. Integrating the YSP-2200 with an existing home entertainment system is claimed to be easy via the Consumer Electronics Control (CEC). When the YSP-2200 is connected to a CEC-compatible TV, such as a Panasonic VIERA Link compatible TV, you are able to activate the YSP-2200 and TV using the TV’s remote control.

It decodes HD Audio signals from Blu-ray disc players and all other digital sources. The company’s Cinema DSP technology reproduces soundscapes in any listening environment.

The YSP-2200 allows users to select from 11 Cinema DSP programs, including three ‘Movie’, three ‘Music’ and five ‘Entertainment’ programs. Connectivity is also accounted for with 3 in/1 out HDMI connections with support for 3D. Audio Return Channel (ARC) enables audio from the TV to be heard from the unit via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable. HDMI also delivers Deep Colour, x.v.Colour and Auto Lip-Sync.

iPod and iPhone integration with the YSP-2200 is achieved using the included YDS-12 dock which normally retails for $179.
Yamaha’s IntelliBeam automated calibration feature is said to ensure optimum multi-channel sound reproduction in any shaped room. By monitoring and analysing the sound with the included microphone, IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles, while optimising the level and frequency response of each beam.
