OPPO Air Glass – assisted reality (OPPO INNO DAY 2021)

Virtual reality (metaverse) and augmented reality (Pokémon) may be trendy, but the real productive work is in assisted reality. OPPO Air Glass is an extension of your smartphone that essentially gives you a discrete head-up display.

When I first saw the OPPO Air Glass, I wondered why OPPO had made such a ‘limited’ device, but the logic is simple. If you are going to wear it, it needs to be light and efficient. Definitely, no camera to spy on people (Yes, Facebook, we are looking at your Ray-Ban Stories).

It is a 30g monocle that clips onto the left side of glasses frames. Inside is an OPPO Spark Micro projector with 3 million nits brightness (average 1400) that projects 16-256 greyscales levels (green mono) onto a Sapphire crystal lens (think of it as a screen for the projector).

It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC and communicates with your smartphone or smartwatch via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

You can communicate with it via touch, voice, head movement and hand motion. It will work with sunglasses and prescription lenses. It has a Smart Glass App for OPPO Watch 2 and works with any OPPO phone with ColorOS 11 or later.

With Air Glass, we have finally created a smart glass product that is truly within reach of consumers. As its futuristic design suggests, OPPO Air Glass will revolutionize how we view and consume information. The easy-to-use display can present key messages we need right in front of our eyes.

What is OPPO Air Glass for?

Initially weather, calendar, health, teleprompter, translation, and navigation. It is not for movies or images, and developers will be encouraged to look for uses that present information in front of the user’s eye.

Clearly, this is version 1 – a proof of concept that we may not see in Australia. But it is interesting to provide information in a discrete way – just like a head-up display.
