Telstra: conferencing by hologram

Telstra Chief Technology Officer Dr Hugh Bradlow appeared in front of an Adelaide audience today – not in the flesh – but as a hologram.

In an Australian first, Dr Bradlow’s life-sized, real-time hologram walked, talked and interacted with business executives at the Adelaide conference while his image was captured in front of cameras at Telstra’s Melbourne office.

A set up of cameras and microphones in Adelaide allowed Dr Bradlow to see and hear his subjects despite the fact that they were mnore than 700 kilometres away. meanwhile back in Adelaide, the conference audience watched Bradlow’s life size hi def image (projected onto a transparent screen or ‘foil’).

The technology used to transport Bradlow’s hologram to conference members is the same as the technology used by retail giant Target to host their model-less virtual fashion show in New York City last year.

Telstra Enterprise MD David Thodey says the trechnology is not just gimmickry – businesses could benefit from real application of the invention.

“If you’re in the US and can’t attend a conference you could save many hours flying time in that sense to give presentations,” he said.

“We’ve all seen this sort of thing in futuristic sci-fi movies, but the reality is that it can be done here and now, as we have just demonstrated.”
