Strange Smell Causes Complaints Over Dell’s Latest Laptop

Dell has not had a good time of its lately with corporate raider Carl Icahn giving founder Michael Dell a hard time over trying to buy back a controlling share of the company he founded, and its marketshare dipping slightly over the past couple of years.
However, the latest negative issue surrounding the company has more to do with cat pee than corporate raiding. Customers are complaining that one of its latest laptops, the Latitude 6430u has an awful odour reeking from it that apparently smells like cat urine.
The good news is that people who own the device say they really like it. Unfortunately, a couple of users initially thought their cat had either sprayed the laptop or had peed on it due to an awful smell emitting from the portable PC. Yet it turns out that it might be a result of a unspecified manufacturing process that the company says it has since fixed.
Users thought the smell was coming from the keyboard or palm rest, so Dell advised users to clean the keyboard with a soft cloth, but this did nothing to abate the ‘awful’ smell. Dell says that newer versions of the laptop do not have the problem, only those in the initial manufacturing run. Dell was at pains to point out that there was no biological contamination on the keyboards and did not present a health hazard to users.
It seems that they have nailed down the problem to the laptop’s palm rest, and has said that it will replace the component for customers who have the small emitting from the device.
