Sony today unveiled the company’s first entry into the phablet market – the Xperia Z Ultra at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai, China.

Previously codenamed as Togari, the Xperia Z Ultra features a massive 6.4-inch 1080p screen. The display utilises Sony’s Opticontrast and X-Reality tech which is the successor of the mobile Bravia Technology adopted from the company’s line of premium TVs.

The device sports a Snapdragon 800 chipset partnered with a 2.2GHz quad-core Krait processor and an Adreno 330 GPU. The Xperia Z Ultra runs on Android 4.2.2 with revamped Sony software that makes use of the extra computing power and larger size.

There’s an 8MP Exmor-RS sensor at the back of the device that can record 1080p videos and supports HDR for both stills and movies. The phablet also uses the same OmniBalance design as the Xperia Z, including the tempered glass on the back. The phablet has IP58 certification which means it is also water and dust proof like the Xperia Z and Xperia ZR.

In terms of connectivity, the phablet packs 4G LTE connectivity, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is expected to launch in Q3 2013 in three colour options – white, black and purple.
