With Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 handsets, you would think this would be the Finnish company’s main focus. However, it is the cheaper and lower end phones that make up Nokia’s cash cow.

In its bid to pump up more lower-end phones, Nokia has announced the 109.

The Nokia 109 is powered by the Series 40 operating system and operate on GSM 900/1800 as well as GSM 850/1900 frequencies. Measuring 110mm x 46mm x 14.8mm, the entire Nokia 109 tips the scales at just 77 grams, where it sports a 1.8-inch TFT display at 128 x 160 pixels.

It also has GPRS/EDGE 2G, Nokia Xpress Browser, a 3.5mm Nokia AV connector and 2.0mm charging connector, a paltry 16MB of internal memory, but there is microSD expansion up to 32GB.

This is an easy-to-use and affordable Internet-capable phone, offering up to 7.5 hours talk-time. It costs just around AU$40.

The handset will become available this quarter in Europe, China and the Asia Pacific region.
