New Lumix Blurs Lines Between Professional And Consumer Cameras

Panasonic will tell you that the three reasons people by high-end camera is resolution, lens quality, as well as size and weight. Add wifi to that list, as this feature is almost standard on this type of kit, and the company’s latest  digital mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC), the Lumix DMC-GH3, has this functionality.

Wifi allows you to have a never-ending storage if you have a huge hard drive on your home computer, even more if you have a cloud service. This GH3 does have an SD slot, so there is still storage, but you don’t have to worry about running out of room if you have decided to shoot a video in HD. You can utilise the Lumix Link application for Android/iOS smartphones and tablets, too.

At a press conference today Panasonic says the market is set to grow about 70 percent this year with these cameras, and having a crack at one, it’s not hard to see why.

It has an OLED display veiwfinder; a magnesium alloy full diecast body and advanced splash and dustproof construction; new control layout with three dials on the front and back as well as single-function buttons; and the ability to record still images consecutively at around 6 fps.

The video recording capabilit, now has a greater variety of options in its format and bitrate, claims Panasonic.

On the technical side the unit has a 16.05 megapixel Live MOS Sensor that is said to achieves high-resolution images with minimum noise, while the new Venus Engine attains high-speed, high-quality signal processing.

Panasonic has also developed new optional accessories to expand shooting possibilities. They include a detachable battery grip (DMW-BGGH3E) with integrated controls for a vertical viewing angle, and splash/dustproof design; external wireless TTL flash (DMW-FL360LE) with an LED, ideal for video recording; and a stereo shotgun microphone (DMW-MS2E).
