Netflix ranks Australian ISP’s video streaming capabilities

Netflix overnight added Australia and New Zealand to its ISP Speed Index, a directory that compares Netflix performance during peak streaming periods.

TPG ranked first, with an average download speed of 3.36Mbps. Optus and iiNet followed closely behind, with average download speeds of 3.27Mbps and 3.24Mbps respectively. Out of the seven Australian internet service providers compared, Telstra ranked last, with an average download speed of 2.23Mbps. In New Zealand, Snap placed first, with an average download speed of 3.77Mbps.

To calculate these averages, Netflix measures speeds across the peak three hours of streaming on a daily basis per ISP. Speed is measured across all available devices, including smartphones, tablets, consoles and televisions. Netflix will update these rankings monthly.

On a global scale, Australia and New Zealand ranked 18th and 14th respectively, out of the 29 countries that Netflix compares. Switzerland is currently ranked first, with its fastest ISP, Improware, achieving an average download speed of 4.5Mbps.
