Gibson set to release self-tuning guitars

Tuning a guitar isn’t usually a hard procedure, but instrument maker Gibson aim to make it even easier as they get ready to release self-tuning guitars

Tuning a guitar isn’t usually a hard procedure, but instrument maker Gibson aim to make it even easier as they get ready to release self-tuning guitars.

Developed over the past ten years, the Powertune system uses a set of magnetic pick-ups made from a material that creates an electric charge when stressed. Connected to a digital signal processor, the pick-ups work out the frequency of each string and send instructions to the motorised pegs in the guitar head on how much to tighten or loosen the guitar string by.

Allowing more than just simple guitar tuning, the Gibson Powertune system could allow you to tune your instrument to unusual tunings to play all manner of song styles. And if Gibson’s Powertune system is anywhere near as successful as we think it’ll be, roadies might soon have to start looking for a new job.
