Catholic pain subject to divine intervention

Being holy can take the pain away. Ask Catholics.

Catholics have less pain than agnostics and atheists when being mildly shocked with electricity – as long as they’re devoted to their faith, and they’re looking at a picture of the Virgin Mary.

A new study in the U.K., which concluded that the brain was able to associate the calming affect of the Virgin Mary to reduce pain in religious people.

Unfortunately, the study only dealt with 24 people, 12 practicing Catholics and 12 non-religious, before reaching its findings. The atheists were shown a Da Vinci painting, ‘Lady with an Ermine’, while the Catholics were shown ‘Vergine annunciate’. Both groups viewed the paintings for 30 seconds before receiving 20 electrical pulses to the back of the left hand.
