A few weeks ago Instagram announced that it will soon serve ads to its members particularly those in the United States. And it looks like it might be heading everyone’s way based on the positive feedback it received from the US Market.

In an event in San Francisco, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that over 5% of Instagram ad views have led to likes. One particular ad for instance of a Michael Kors watch was reportedly viewed by over 6.15 million people and received over 218,000 Likes, which would equate to around a 3.7% conversion.

According to Systrom the addition of ads to the platform marks the first steps in the company’s transition to becoming an influential company that affects the mainstream. As for the future of Instagram, Systrom hinted that a possible route the company may take is to improve the search functionality of the platform, probably similar to how Facebook has improved its Graph Search.

Another area of growth for the photo-sharing site concerns the metadata of photos uploaded to the site. Systrom said that proximity and location are both opportunities for Instagram.
