How Thin Can LCDs Go?

3.9mm apparently, if you are to believe the news coming out of Japan

How long before a television gets so thin that you might as well go to a projector? Who knows, but Samsung now has a prototype that is only 3.9mm thick.

It’s good for consumers that CE companies are always trying for one-up-manship when it comes to making gear bigger (or in this case smaller), better and faster – because in the long run, we’re the beneficiaries. Surely there must be some compromises when a television is made this thin?

Not according to Japanese website Akihabara News. Although Samsung’s prototype is up to a third the thickness of previous slimline models, is said to have a 5000:1 contrast ratio as well as a 120Hz LCD panel. Something not to be sneezed at.
