Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 15 Dec 2009
By Mike Wheeler
Being new to this franchise, and after hearing all the rantings of how good it was going to be, I was looking forward to playing this one, and after being disappointed by another hyped recent release, my hopes weren't that high...I should have had more faith in the folk at Infinity Ward.
This is a great game, and anybody who likes first-person shooters will love this. Ok, so the story is full of hyperbole and you definitely have to suspend disbelief, but if I have one true complaint about this game, it's that it is not long enough. It only took about seven hours to play all up, and for a relative newcomer like me that was not a lot of time.
Sure, you can pop on Xbox Live and get some DLC in the near future, and there are side missions/gameplay you can enter once you have finished the game, but I felt a little short changed once the main mission was over.
As a gamer you are several characters spread across the globe trying to overcome the spread of terrorism by taking out Russian uber nationalist Vladimir Makarov (from COD 4), and a rogue US general (who I won't name for spoiler reasons). You play several characters including a US ranger, undercover agent or member of multinational commando unit Task Force 141. You have various missions to complete including stopping an invasion of the US by Russia due to the actions of Makarov.
You get an array of weaponry, and heaps of ammo to fight your way out of trouble including a shotgun, machine gun, pistol and automatic rifle. The ammo takes a while to run out, and there are plenty of obstacles to overcome throughout the game.
Graphics are top-notch and there is plenty of gore to justify its R15 rating. I used an Xbox 360 and found the character control and ability to use weapons very easy, with movement and targetting especially good. Don't be surprised if you can't "jump" as well as Enzo, the main character in Assassin's Creed II. You can do so, but only over small bumps and flotsam and jetsam that is in the way. You'll also find that if you accidentally fall near a cliff or off a roof top, you'll either die, or be very badly hurt.
Another minor complaint I have other than it being too short, is that when you save the game and go back to it, it hasn't saved close enough to where you've finished. This means there were a couple of difficult parts that I managed to get through, only to have to go through them again when I restarted the game.
Overall, one of the standout games of 2009.
4.5 out of 5 Stars.
