Australia flops at box office   01 Dec 2008

Australia flops at box officeAustralia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, has flopped so far at the box office.

Sales for the epic directed by Baz Luhrmann have been so low that Australia could potentially not recover the US $150 million spent making it.

"It hasn't sold as well as we expected," said Greg Hackett, duty manager of independent Sydney multiplex, Randwick Ritz. "Unfortunately, I think the reviews have hit really hard."

Luhrmann's outback adventure grossed US $11 million in the first three days, behind Twilight, Disney animated film Bolt, 007 film Quantum of Solace and Christmas comedy Four Holidays.

While entertainment newspaper Variety reported that "the film is building interest among adult moviegoers, as with Luhrmann's previous films, Australia faces a bigger threat: another blockbuster in the form of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

The remake featuring Keanu Reeves is set to hit Australian cinemas on Boxing Day.
