Yahoo has announced today that they have detected a coordinated effort to access Yahoo Mail accounts. The company has since then prompted impacted users to reset their passwords.

According to Yahoo’s investigation, the list of usernames and passwords that were used to execute the attack was likely sourced from a third-party database and they have no reason to believe that they were obtained directly from Yahoo servers. Moreover, the attack was said to target names and email addresses from the affected accounts’ recent sent mails.

Users whose accounts have been compromised should now be receiving notifications from Yahoo prompting them to reset their password. Yahoo has also implemented second sign-in verification to allow users to re-secure their accounts and has implemented additional security measures to block attacks against their systems.
