Critics of Windows 8 will be pleased to know that Microsoft has announced that the updated 8.1 version will be rolling out on October 18 this year.

One of the biggest bugbears was the lack of a Start button, which not only seemed impractical but was confusing for novices who just wanted a simple way to start and navigate the operating system on their PC. The tiles on the start screen will also come in two sizes – big and small. The bigger ones being the tiles you use most often.

Other new features include Cloud connectivity to Sky Drive, two new Bing apps (Food & Drink and Health & Fitness) and updates for the Bing Maps app.

It was also mooted that when you update features on your primary PC, it will automatically update your other devices running Windows 8 via your Microsoft account.

Overall the changes are superficial, but have addressed the main problems critics highlighted when Windows 8 was first launched.
