A major redesign in a technology that we’ve come to rely on for years is about to happen in the coming months. USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that the next generation USB is now in development.

The new version of the USB will be designed to fit in slimmer and smaller devices such as Ultrabooks and tablets. The new Type-C connector will also provide support for scalable bus performance as well as scalable power charging, for those who use their USB ports to charge their devices.

But perhaps the most convenient new feature of the Type-C connector is its multi-directional design, which will allow users to plug any USB-capable device in any direction, eliminating the need to rotate the cable to get the connection in place.

Of course the new design would mean that it will not be compatible with existing USB ports found in present-day devices. So we may have to see its greater adoption a bit longer after its launch.
