Apple is allegedly looking at home automation as a possible opportunity in expanding the reach of its products. According to a report by The Financial Times, the company is looking to using the iPhone to control certain home appliances such as home lighting, security systems and other appliances.

The company will also reportedly allow other manufacturers to make products specifically designed for the iPhone’s Smart Home features much like how Apple manages its partnership with other companies included in its iPhone program.

The report doesn’t say how exactly Apple plans to achieve this feat. For starters, the report doesn’t say if the Smart Home features will be available on current and previous iPhone models or if it will only be added to future models. Moreover, iPhones are only able to connect to certain home appliances through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth only while most appliance makers use NFC to pair with smart devices (although this points to the next-gen iPhone having NFC).

Apple’s annual developer conference kicks off next month so we’ll probably see mentions of Smart Home during the event.
