Sony Takes on 3DS With New Portable Console

With hacking issues of its PlayStation Network still a problem Sony Computer Entertainment has announced its latest line up of gear for PlayStation aficionados at the E3 gaming conference in Los Angeles, including its latest portable console, the PlayStation Vita

Available at the end of the year, the PS Vita incorporates a 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a multi-touch pad on the rear. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through “touch, grab, trace, push and pull” finger motions. Also PS Vita features dual analogue sticks which the company claims will enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience.

On the content front, SCEE showcased a collection of software titles developed exclusively for PS Vita including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet and Ruin (working title),

Uncharted: Golden Abyssis said to deliver vibrant cinematic visuals and combines input from the front-touch screen and dual analogue sticks. LittleBigPlanet allows users to play, create and share with the system’s front touch screen and rear touch pad as well as its front and rear cameras. Finally, Ruin brings RPG action and delivers interoperable compatibility for players to save their game on PS Vita and continue on at home using the PS3 system. SCEE also unveiled a collection of PS Vita titles that will be available at launch including wipEout, ModNation Racers,Reality Fighter, Super Stardust Delta, Sound Shapes, Hot Shots Golf, Hustle Kings and more.

New games for the PS3 that utilise full stereoscopic 3D support include Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Resistance 3 and God of War: Origins. SCEE also announced the return of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, which will treat players to an all-new adventure in stereoscopic 3D featuring classic characters, Sly, Murray and Bentley.

New titles for the Move motion controller include DanceStar Party, Carnival Island (working title), and Medieval Moves. Also highlighted during the conference were eagerly-anticipated PS3 exclusives including Twisted Metal and Starhawk.

First-person shooter Bioshock Infinite from Irrational Games and 2K which will support both PlayStation Move and stereoscopic 3D, and will also include the original Bioshock on the PS3 Blu-ray Disc. Irrational Games also announced a PS Vita title set in the Bioshock universe.
