Samsung’s ruggedised version of the Galaxy S5 has finally become official as it appears on the website of American carrier AT&T.

The handset conforms to earlier rumours with a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1020 pixels with a layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass for protection. Under the bonnet is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip with a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and up to 16GB of built-in storage that can be expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card.

Just like its predecessor, the S5 Active sports the same rugged and weatherproof design thanks to its IP67 and MIL-spec 810G certification. What’s new though is the phone’s built-in heart rate monitor (just like in the Galaxy S5) and an activity zone where all of the phone’s fitness-related features are located. The Activity Zone can be accessed with a “convenience key” that is located at the side of the handset.

The Galaxy S5 Active also sports a 16MP rear camera, a 2MP front-facing camera and a 2800mAh battery, which according to Samsung can last up to 20 days in standby mode.

The phone is now available on AT&T for US$199.99 on a 2-year contract and should be available in the coming weeks to other markets.
