Smartbands, smartwatches and other wearables are selling like hotcakes these days. And it looks like the number of companies working on their own wearable isn’t about to go down just yet. As a result, various manufacturers have tried to make their product unique among the others by offering special features from touchscreen displays to built-in cameras.

Tomtom, a Dutch manufacturer of navigation systems is one of the newest companies to join the wearable craze with its Tomtom Runner Cardio GPS watch. However, unlike other smartwatch-makers, Tomtom decided to take a different route in terms of what its product can offer to consumers.

The Tomtom Runner Cardio watch features a 1.3-inch display with a resolution of 144 x 168 pixels and several sensors for monitoring the user’s vital statistics including a motion sensor, a compass, and an optical heart rate monitor.

The pod which houses the brain of the watch as well as its various sensors can be removed from the strap (comes in two colours). The strap is made from rubber and envelopes the entire pod and ensures a snug fit between the back of the device and your skin. The package also comes with a USB cable that can be used to charge the main unit and connect it to a computer.

At the bottom of the display is the device’s button, which is used to navigate through the watches menu as the Runner Cardio GPS watch doesn’t have a touchscreen.

The Tomtom Runner Cardio as the name suggests works better for running activities. The watch can monitor a user’s speed when running as well as the distance covered during the run and the calories burned. And of course it can also monitor a user’s heart rate.

The watch is water-resistant up to 165 feet and connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth.  There are also pre-programmed “zones” and goals for users who plan to use the watch for training.

The Tomtom Runner Cardio watch is now available in Harvey Norman stores for AU$347.
