Nvidia announced today its plans to license out its graphics technology to other companies in order to take advantage of the growing market for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

According to the company blog post, Nvidia will start licensing out the GPU core in its Kepler chip. The company also plans to license out its visual computing portfolio, which will let licensees develop their own GPU technology using Nvidia’s array of patents.

The company’s shift in strategy reflects how other markets (specifically the PC market) are affecting Nvidia. By allowing other companies to make use Nvidia’s technology, the company is effectively putting its products in more devices in contrast to just partnering with just a select number of companies.

Once the company’s strategies take effect, it’s expected that competition among companies who use Nvidia’s technology will result in better products and can even drive prices down both of which will benefit consumers. What do you think? Share with us your thoughts by leaving a comment below.
