A recent leakage coming from Nintendo’s US offices have started rumours that the Japanese manufacturer might be planning to release an Android-based tablet in the very near future.

An alleged Nintendo software engineer named Nando Monterazo published a number of tweets saying that he is currently exploring a tablet by Nintendo has a fully modified UI whose base is Google’s Android. He also added that the tablet’s games will be geared towards educational purposes but will feature a number of familiar Nintendo characters.

Monterazo’s tweet has now been taken down (possibly by Nintendo), which somehow makes this story a bit more interesting. At present, the closest thing that Nintendo has for a tablet would be its controller for the Wii U, so in case this rumour is true, it wouldn’t be surprising if the tablet would use similar components from the Wii U controller.

Nonetheless, a Nintendo tablet would play an important role on the company’s reputation as well as in its finances, especially when its current Wii U gaming console isn’t performing very well in the market.
