We’ve already heard of rumours that Microsoft might be planning to release a smaller version of the Surface tablet despite the absence of any leaks about the development of the device in contrast to other products from other manufacturers. But it looks like the status quo has been broken.

The Redmond company has recently sent invites for a “small gathering” happening on May 20 in New York City. The new tablet will reportedly have a screen size between 7 and 8 inches, with the resolution pegged at 1440×1080 pixels giving it an aspect ratio of 4:3 (which is similar to that of the iPad).

The device will reportedly pack an ARM or a Qualcomm processor, which hints that it might run on Windows RT 8.1. But with manufacturers such Lenovo, Dell and Toshiba already churning 7- and 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablets, we wouldn’t rule the appearance of a full OS when the device launches.
