Microsoft Office is now free for iPhone, iPad and Android

Microsoft today announced that its Office suite is now free for iPhone, iPad and Android. As of today, users no longer require an Office 365 subscription to edit documents in Word, PowerPoint and Excel or store them in the cloud.

Microsoft has also updated the iPhone suite of Office apps, bringing them in line with what is offered by the iPad versions. Android owners are able to sign-up for a preview Office for Android, which Microsoft plans to distribute in December. Office for Android will be almost identical to the iPad versions and require Kit Kat or higher.

Following Wednesday's Dropbox partnership announcement, users can now save and open files on Dropbox in both the iPhone and iPad Office apps.

Microsoft also announced a new touch-optimised version of Office for Windows 10, but said that further details will be provided at a later date. Office for Windows 10 is expected to mimic the iPad version.

A subscription is still required to edit documents that are stored on OneDrive for Business or Dropbox for Business.
