Ahead of plans to remove messaging from the Facebook mobile app, the social media giant has been urging users to download their standalone Messenger app. Users who haven't yet installed the Messenger app will be prompted to do so when they visit the messages tab in the core mobile app. In addition, Facebook has been emailing users informing them of the change.

According to Facebook, users will still see new message notifications in the Facebook, and will be able to seamless switch between the two. Facebook is yet to confirm when messaging will be removed from its mobile app.

Facebook's Messenger app is available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. No changes will be made to Facebook's desktop implementation.
