Intel has always been known as a reliable hardware manufacturer who builds anything from wearables, computer processors and smartphone boards. But this time, the company is temporarily crossing over to the software side and launching its own instant messaging app called Pocket Avatars.

The app uses a smartphones front-camera in order to track a user’s movements and translate it into a 3D character or “avatar” in a video along with the various movements done during the recording of the video.

At present the app is able to recognise certain gestures like nodding, blinking, sticking out your tongue and raising eyebrows. Intel is promising that it will be bringing more features in the future including movements from the neck and shoulder.

Pocket Avatars can only send 15 seconds of video since the process of real-time tracking takes a lot of grunt from the device’s computing power. The app is now available both on Android’s Google Play and Apple’s iTunes. You can download 45 additional avatars for US$0.99
